James the Flute Player- Adelaide Project

This is James, a rather burly looking chap who I saw playing the flute in quite an accomplished manner and busking in Rundle Mall. He was gracious enough to let me take his picture and even lift his wrap around sunnies.

Chloe Kim- street portrait artist

This is a portrait of Korean backpacker and artist Chloe Kim. Adelaide is a place where people of all sorts of backgrounds and stories end up- it's nice that way. It's nice that art helps us share our stories.
This is oil on canvas 915mm x 605mm. My first portrait in oil and I'm pretty chuffed so far, so there will hopefully be more to come.

The Adelaide Project

A sneak peak at something I'm working on called the Adelaide project, which will be a collection of original works in traditional media. These pieces are acrylic on board in a semi-stylised manner, trying to work in a little looser way- more like my life drawing style.

Golden Mane

This is the cover for the first in a series of fantasy novels by Sam Gilmour. Check him out on the facebook SJB Gilmour.

I did an original acrylic painting then gave it a substantial digital paint over to get the effect I wanted. Designed the font for this which was fun. This is the ipad version, but there are promo posters and flyers for print as well :)

Also werewolves are cool.

A quick piece trying to work with value and composition to get a bit more dynamic. Been really inspired by the work of Ralph Horsley lately.

Hello all from the far reaches of cyberspace.

I have been most remiss in posting, which is made all the worse because so much has been happening. I submitted a piece for the Schaffas 2 exhibition which you can see at http://www.screamdance.com/schaffas_pages/schaffas2_62.html as well as all the other crazy entries- some of which are outstanding! There is also a Schaffas Artbook which has photos of all the schaffas from the two exhibitions.

Tickle Me Zoo, the childrens' book I am illustrating is in the final stages of painting- just doing the covers. Ben Long and I recieved second place at the CYA writers' and illustrators' conference for Graphic Novels and Illustrated Children's Books.

A personal piece reminded me of some of the gardens I saw in Tokyo a while back- had a lot of roaming cats that seemed to own the place.

Rust

This is a redo featuring some of the suggestions made by Drew- well pretty much all of them really. The image isn't exactly the same dimensions now but overall it works much better- thank you Drew.
I am gradually becoming more intuitive with digital paint- yay.

My interpretation of the above quote sees a young King or Emperor being taken out to a forgotten edge of the kingdom by his tutor to show him why this must be.

Ice Angel WIP

A purely digital paint with an attempt to get away from drawing and invest in a more painterly style with some moderately strong shadows, but with little or no black. A bit more to do I think. Comments welcome.

Alice in Wonderland

A mural in my little one's room.

It occupies the entire wall- about 3m x 2.4m. Acrylic.

This piece tries to reflect some of the mayhem and nonsense of the book as well as the strange undercurrents in each of the characters.

Other than that, it's fun!

But wait there's more... colour!

Ice Festival version 2.0

My editor commented that the skin was indeed too orange! So here is another version with a more realistic palette and possibly it works better tonally too. As always with colour: less is more... more or less. Something like that anyway.

The last image in this series of sketches for my Children's Portfolio. I'm just beginning to feed in the colour with this one. I wanted the purple to harmonise with the blue that I did previously as the two images will probably be seen as a spread.

The yellow/orange was then chosen to vibrate off that- it's too saturated to be a realistic skin tone, but for the sake of a stylised illustration I'm hoping it works =).

Addit: I printed this out today and I'm a little bit chuffed to see it in hard copy- it semed to come out ok I think!
