Dragon training

Another D&D portfolio piece: learning to fly has inherent occupational hazards.
A quick piece trying to work with value and composition to get a bit more dynamic. Been really inspired by the work of Ralph Horsley lately.
Acrylic on board.

  1. Ralph is a very good inspiration to have, and no mistake! Your values are working well, Tom, and I like the way you've handled the scales. Some really strong comp and design in here too. Is that shape behind the falling rider the end of the dragon's tail? I'd maybe continue it into another curving coil which the rider could overlap, or remove it - the shape is clashing with the rider just now.

  3. I am flattered that you are inspired by my work, and it's good to see you working hard at D&D subject matter.

You are certainly heading in the right direction with your values here; the background part of the tail does really drop back into the image, which helps nicely with the depth.

Just watch the values in the shading used to define the scale shape, it could lighten where the highlights fall, and that would help with the form as well.
